God Dies And Leaves A Journalist In Charge

A reviewer for Slate magazine wants the film industry to outlaw “movies or shows where the hero is a decade or more older than his love interest”. Well, it is certainly true that we do not see nearly enough romance between two mature people on the screen, and that even well-preserved actresses of 50 or so have trouble finding work. But a ban, really? Who exactly is entitled to rule that a 40-25 or 50-35 romance cannot possibly happen? She allows an exception “for anti-heroes whose attraction to younger women helps establish how deeply flawed they are as people”. So this goes further than the Hays Code’s ruling on what must not be shown on screen, she wants the cinema to tell us who are bad people, namely anyone who does not conform to her privileged knowledge of ultimate good and evil.
