What Man Is Not Meant To Know

Baker and Bellis DNA-tested children in housing estates first in Liverpool and then in Guildford, finding that only around 80 per cent were the offspring of the men they thought were their fathers. That is, the cuckoo rate was about one in five. As far as I know, this work has never been repeated elsewhere by different experimenters. Since it is so often quoted by male cynics and so indignantly repudiated by feminists, one might think that both sides would share an interest in discovering whether or not these findings were due to poor experimental design, deliberate scientific fraud, peculiar local conditions, or a cosmic constant. While waiting for someone to repeat the experiment, we may reflect on who has the most powerful of motives for not wanting this to happen – and for training us to accept the hurt feelings of female arts graduates as a scientific methodology.
