The Rule Of Thumb

It is a rule of thumb in zoology that the bigger the male of the species in relation to the female, the more that species’ reproductive system is about harem-keeping by a dominant male, and the more equal the sizes of the sexes, the more it is about monogamous pair-bonding. The relative sizes of modern men and women suggests that we are something less than strictly monogamous; and the interesting thing is that, according to Charles Lockwood, palaeontology shows that prehuman males were much larger than prehuman females. If this is so, maybe there is something to the female rhetoric about cavemen after all. Although the trend may now be towards monogamy, there is plenty of legacy programming for the opposite, in both sexes.
