Fattipuffs, Thinnifers And The Tribe

It is interesting that both “fat” and “scrawny” are insults. This is because both indict anti-social strategies. In a tribe on the margin of existence, a fat person represents someone who seems to have contrived to take more than his share, whereas a scrawny or ‘skinny’ person suggests someone who apparently lacks the muscles to pull his weight. The fact that the judgment might be wrong in individual cases does not prevent it being correct as an approximation, based on averages. If there was such a thing as group selection, therefore, which there probably isn’t, social sanctions against everybody not of the more or less optimal body-weight and musculature would make perfect sense.
