How Dare They!

A Briton complains: “Germans work significantly shorter weeks than we do, have more free time and longer holidays. They have time to develop friendships outside the office in a way that the British have long since forgotten.” Indeed. How dare those lazy Krauts do something with their time other than maximise shareholder value? Anyone would think that they had lives of their own, rather than being the indentured servants of the corporations. And developing friendships outside the office is inherently subversive; perhaps that is why certain sorts of corporation demand a 70-hour week, not because anyone gets any more work done in the extra time, for they generally do no such thing (ask any Japanese sarariman), but simply to prevent the formation of any competing ties. In the early days of Communism, you were not supposed to have any emotional investment in your family, friends, or anyone except the Party and the victory of socialism; but then, all slave-states are bound to have common features.
