The Land Of Kim Il Advisory

In the old days films simply had minimum ages for admission, and the reasons for the classification had to be pruriently guessed at. Now American websites are full of “parental advisories” for each movie, describing precise levels of unsuitability for children based on the nature and frequency of swear-words, bare breasts and so forth. There are even so-called reviews that do not describe the film itself, but only discuss and catalogue the “sensuality” (honest! they really do use that word), “mild profanity” and other unsuitable elements. One wonders whether these advisories are really employed in selecting children’s viewing, or whether some Americans have discovered a new method for guaranteeing that they never encounter anything new or are exposed to any sights, words or ideas to which they have not consented in advance; censorship of a North Korean thoroughness, but self-imposed.
