After You

American liberals are horrified at the Muslim penalty for apostasy, theoretically death. When, however, the same American liberals affirm that the sovereign individual may choose to quit any association into which he has entered, or into which he had the misfortune to be born, a right that in most of the world is called “self-determination” and is held to extend to collective secession, one wonders why they do not go the whole hog and apologise to the memory of Jefferson Davis. (Not that I am a fan of the Confederacy, I just want to point out an inconsistency.)

That a country founded on the very principle of self determination, a nation that had so recently declared a right to break away from England because of political differences, would so soon engage in a fratricidal negation of those same principles tells you just about everything you really need to know about this country. That kind of “flexibility” is not a recent development. On the contrary it is thoroughly ab ovo. One needn’t be an apologist for slavery to see the CSA’s point.
