On Innocence And Living With Mom

Everybody complains when youngsters are unwilling to leave the nest; but if adulthood means nothing but vicious competition, why should it be embraced as long as there is an alternative, whether that be remaining a child or becoming a client of the welfare state? And why do we so praise the “innocence” of childhood and at the same time so condemn the reluctance of an adolescent to relinquish that very innocence? Both reactions are doubtless the result of guilt at the world we have created for them.
