Remaining Outside Desire

A feminist writer on the Middle Ages asks whether religious chastity was nothing but patriarchal oppression, or whether it was “the choice to remain outside male desire and the refusal to circulate as an object of male possession”. Funnily enough, these two alternatives leave no space for female desire, which an earlier generation of feminists had thought was a rather Good Thing. And what about the male choice to remain outside female desire and the refusal to circulate as an object of female attention-seeking?
