Women In Heretical Cults

Medieval heretical movements often proclaimed that all women should be “held in common,” as do some wacky cults today. We tend to assume that medieval women were not enthusiastic about either being considered as property or being common to many men. And yet women joined these movements, and still do. Coercion by alpha-male psychopaths, who are so often to be found heading religious sects, is one explanation. Another might be that if you are going to be “held” anyway, it might be better to be “held” by a group than be at the mercy of an individual. This is quite similar to what many sex workers say, that the Life offers liberation from enslavement to a single husband.
