Because It Feels Good

Those who are astonished at the transparent lies of demagogues and the gullibility of their audience are missing the point. Lies have the same emotional effect on the liars as on those who believe them honestly. For example, intoning, “We were victims of an unprovoked attack” causes a rush of righteous indignation that is equally pleasurable whether or not the proposition is thought to be true or known to be false. It follows that the reason it replicates as a meme is not cognitive but endocrinal.
