The Load Of Bearing Pillars

It is a terrible thing to grow up in a trashy home with drink and drugs and beating and incest. There is, however, one relative advantage; you don’t have to work very hard to convince people that you have a hard row to hoe. It’s a lot harder when the parents were Pillars of the Community and messed with your head in a genteel middle-class way; then the whole community clucks in sympathy with your parents instead. “What lovely people, that they should have such children!”

Yes, an unhealthy portion of middle-class parents are façade fetishists. It’s all a question of appearance, and God help the child who reflects badly on them!
