A child brought into the world to be an instrument of the parents’ worldly ambitions, a fashion accessory or a hood ornament, may fail to fulfil these functions adequately. It then becomes a piece of defective machinery that must be “fixed” in some way. There is no shortage of child mechanics who promise such parents that they will have the child running smoothly in no time.
