Permission To Despise

Peace, liberty, justice, tolerance and compassion are all moral values. But when family-values conservatives talk about “Values”, it is never such things they mean. In the conservative idiolect, “values” appears to signal nothing but the intention to be extremely unpleasant to anyone not organising their sexual lives in the way the conservatives (pretend to) organise their own.

The use of “family values” as a synonym for “ethics” may be interpreted in several ways: the religious right imagines that the possession of a family causes a high level of ethical consciousness; the religious right imagines that possession of a high level of ethical consciousness causes the foundation of a family; or else the religious right merely wants to buy the votes of patriarchs and matriarchs by giving them the permission they desire to despise someone, in this case the un-familied.
