Let’s Hear It For The Ugly Sisters

There have been subversive retellings of the Cinderella story, and so there should be. Everyone has to believe that the Ugly Sisters were vain, cruel and nasty, because of the universal conviction that the face is the mirror of the soul. In fact, it was only rational for the unfortunate sisters to fear financial exclusion in favour of the daughter of the man their mother has married; she is none of their blood. Ella naturally felt the same way about them, as potential interlopers on her own, parental, inheritance. So she put one over on them with the aid of magic, which may be shorthand for the irrational male behaviour caused by her superior looks. Would it have mattered if the older women were ugly, but kind and sweet-tempered, while Ella was a bimbo and a bitch?
